Having only been around since late 2008, The Freelance Whales are already considered long overdue. Playing shows locally in Brooklyn/New York City and spreading throughout the East Coast, this five-piece is on the move and grinding it out. These artists are beginning a journey worth watching.
Thriving on multiple layers of complex and entrancing rhythms, their music comes together seamlessly with catchy instrumentals and inviting vocals. Their sound includes an unusual assortment of instruments such as guitars, banjo, drums, bass, synthesizers, cello, glockenspiel, harmonium, and the amiable voices filling rare gaps with ranging vocal movements. The minor details spotted throughout each track are intricate and well balanced, creating beauty in the large spectrum like pointillism. To catch each piece would take multiple listens.
Earlier this year they released their first independent full-length album, Weathervanes. Starting strong with Generator ^ First Floor, the song proclaims their style right from the start. Each track moves smoothly into the next weaving together a tight album that’s well beyond most introductory records.
